Keep your VPS and server costs under control

Practical ways to pay only for what you use at UnderHost: right-size your plan from real usage, choose free control panels where they fit, avoid surprise renewals, and cancel unused services correctly.

On this page

Most hosting overspend comes from three things: a plan bigger than the workload needs, paid extras nobody uses any more, and services that renew because nobody cancelled them in time. This guide shows how to find each one on your UnderHost account. For how invoices and billing cycles work, see How billing works.

Measure before you change

Look at real usage over a few weeks, including your busiest days, before you resize. On the server:

terminal
nproc && uptime # CPU cores and load average (1, 5, 15 minutes)
free -h # memory and swap in use
df -h # disk space used per filesystem
vnstat -m # monthly traffic, if vnstat is installed
What you see over several weeksWhat it suggests
Load average well below the number of cores, memory mostly freeThe plan may be larger than you need
Swap in use most of the timeMore memory, or a lighter configuration
Load above the number of cores at busy timesMore CPU, caching, or both
Disk above 80% fullClean up logs and old backups first, then add disk

See VPS scaling strategies for caching and other fixes that are often cheaper than a bigger server.

Right-size the plan

  • Too big: ask about moving to a smaller plan. See Upgrade or downgrade your hosting and Resize your Cloud VPS.
  • Too small: upgrade only the resource that runs out, after checking that caching or a configuration change will not fix it.
  • Several small VPS: one larger server can cost less than several small ones, if the sites can safely share it.
  • A dedicated server that sits idle: a Cloud VPS may be enough for the workload.

Control panel licences

A paid control panel licence is a recurring cost on top of the server. UnderHost Cloud VPS and dedicated servers support paid panels (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk) and free ones (CloudPanel, aaPanel, CyberPanel, Webmin/Virtualmin). See control panels.

  • cPanel licences are priced by the number of accounts. Remove accounts you no longer use. Fewer accounts can mean a lower tier.
  • A free panel can fit a server that runs a few of your own sites and needs no reseller features.
  • Changing panels needs a fresh server installation. Plan the move with a backup and a test, and ask about UnderHost's free migration assistance.

Review add-ons and extras

In CustomerPanel, open Services → My Services and check each item:

  • Extra IP addresses that are no longer assigned to a site or service.
  • Old test or staging servers.
  • Licences and add-ons for software you have stopped using.
  • Domains you no longer need, before their renewal date.

Keep backups even when you cut costs. A backup service usually costs much less than rebuilding a lost site.

Bandwidth and traffic

Bandwidth is measured by UnderHost or provider systems. Burstable or unmetered ports are subject to fair use, and excessive or abnormal traffic may require mitigation, a billing adjustment, an upgrade or suspension. To keep traffic predictable:

  • Serve images and static files through a CDN. See Cloudflare setup.
  • Block bad bots and scrapers that waste traffic.
  • Keep large backups off the public web, and copy them over the network only when needed.

Renewals and cancellations

Stopping use does not stop billing

Cancellation requests must be submitted through CustomerPanel before the renewal due date. Changing DNS, deleting files, disabling a payment method or opening a support ticket does not cancel a service.

  • Cancel what you do not need in CustomerPanel before it renews. See How to cancel.
  • Prices can change at renewal, for example when licence, datacenter or vendor costs change. Read your renewal notice.
  • Refunds are limited. Any money-back guarantee applies only to eligible first-time shared hosting or reseller plans where it is advertised. See Terms of Service.
  • Pay invoices by the due date so services are not interrupted.

Deals and free migration

Quarterly cost checklist

  1. Check usage

CPU, memory, disk and traffic for the last three months.

  2. Check services

Every item in CustomerPanel: is it still used, and by whom?

  3. Check licences

Control panel account counts and software licences.

  4. Check renewals

What renews in the next 60 days, and should it?

  5. Check backups

Still running, still restorable, not duplicated in several paid places.

FAQ

Ask in a ticket or see Upgrade or downgrade your hosting. Back up first, and check that your data fits the smaller disk.
No. Only a cancellation request submitted through CustomerPanel before the renewal due date cancels a service.
CloudPanel, aaPanel, CyberPanel and Webmin/Virtualmin are free on UnderHost Cloud VPS and dedicated servers. cPanel, DirectAdmin and Plesk are paid licences.
