Looking Glass, speed test files and WHOIS lookups
Use UnderHost's Looking Glass to test the network before or after you order: ping, traceroute and MTR over IPv4 and IPv6, speed test downloads, IP WHOIS, plus the domain WHOIS lookup on underhost.com.
On this page
The UnderHost Looking Glass at backup.underhost.com runs network tests from UnderHost's network edge in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Use it to check latency and routing from your location before you order, or to gather evidence when a connection is slow.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Location | Montreal, Quebec, Canada (300 Mbps node) |
| Test IPv4 | 192.99.63.107 |
| Test IPv6 | 2607:5300:61:6b::1 |
| Speed test files | 1024 MB and 2048 MB |
| Tests | DNS lookup (host), ping and ping6, traceroute and traceroute6, MTR and MTR6 |
Speed test files
Download a test file to see the speed between you and the node. Your result is limited by the slowest link: your own connection, the route, or the node's 300 Mbps port.
# download and discard, showing the speed (Linux, macOS)
curl -o /dev/null https://backup.underhost.com/1024MB.test
# or with wget
wget -O /dev/null https://backup.underhost.com/2048MB.test
# Windows PowerShell
Invoke-WebRequest https://backup.underhost.com/1024MB.test -OutFile $env:TEMP\test.bin; Remove-Item $env:TEMP\test.bin
Run the test from the machine that will talk to the server: your office, or another server you plan to connect.
Ping, traceroute and MTR
On the Looking Glass, choose a test, enter your own IP address or a hostname, and run it. The test goes from UnderHost to the target. To test the other direction, from your computer to UnderHost:
ping -c 20 192.99.63.107 # Linux, macOS (Windows: ping -n 20)
traceroute 192.99.63.107 # Windows: tracert 192.99.63.107
mtr -rwc 100 192.99.63.107 # Linux, macOS: report with 100 cycles
ping -6 -c 20 2607:5300:61:6b::1 # IPv6
On Windows, pathping 192.99.63.107 gives a result similar to MTR.
Reading the results
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Steady ping, low variation | A healthy path |
| Loss at one middle hop only, not at the end | That router limits replies to tests; usually not a real problem |
| Loss starting at one hop and continuing to the end | A real problem at or after that hop |
| A big jump in time between two hops | Long distance (for example an ocean crossing) or congestion at that point |
* * * lines in traceroute | Hops that do not answer tests; fine if later hops answer |
IP WHOIS lookup
The Looking Glass also queries the public registries for who holds an IP address or network: RIPE (Europe), ARIN (North America), APNIC (Asia Pacific), AFRINIC (Africa), LACNIC (Latin America) and IANA. Leave it on Automatic selection unless you know the registry. This is useful when investigating abuse, routing or geolocation questions.
Domain WHOIS lookup
To look up a domain, use the WHOIS lookup on underhost.com. Enter the full domain with its extension, such as example.com, to see its registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers, status and whether it is available. You can copy or download the raw record. If the domain is free, you can register it from the same page; see Register a domain or Transfer a domain.
For DNS, SSL, email and other checks, see Free UnderHost tools.
Reporting a network problem
Check the status page
See whether there is a known incident. See Check network status.
Collect evidence in both directions
An MTR from your computer to your server, and a test from the Looking Glass back to your IP.
