How to register a domain name: step-by-step guide
Register a new domain name through UnderHost. Covers searching for available domains, choosing a TLD, pricing, privacy protection, Bitcoin payment timing, and what happens after registration.
On this page
UnderHost registers domain names directly through CustomerPanel. You can register a domain as part of a new hosting order or as a standalone purchase. Once registered, you manage renewals, DNS, and WHOIS from CustomerPanel.
Search for a domain
- Log in to customerpanel.ca
- Go to Domains → Register a New Domain
- Enter the domain name you want to check
- Review the availability results and pricing
- Click on the domain you want to add to your cart
If your preferred domain is unavailable, try alternate TLDs such as .net, .org, .ca, .nl, .co, .io, .to, .info, .biz, or .xyz, or add a word to the name.
Choosing a TLD
| TLD | Best for |
|---|---|
| .com | Commercial websites, businesses, global reach-most recognizable |
| .net | Technology companies, networks, infrastructure |
| .org | Non-profits, communities, open-source projects |
| .ca | Canadian businesses and individuals (requires Canadian presence) |
| .nl | Netherlands-focused sites, EU projects, and European brands |
| .io | Tech startups, SaaS products, developer tools |
| .co | Short alternative to .com, popular for startups |
| .to | Tonga ccTLD, often chosen for offshore-friendly or jurisdiction-diverse projects |
| Other country TLDs | .uk, .de, .fr, .eu, .be, .us, .in-for local audience and regional SEO |
UnderHost also offers additional extensions such as .ws, .me, .cc, .tv, .info, .biz, .xyz, .name, and .mobi. Use the domain pricing page for the current searchable list and live pricing.
Complete registration
- Add the domain to your cart
- Choose registration period (1–10 years depending on TLD)
- Add WHOIS privacy protection if offered (recommended-hides your personal contact details from public WHOIS lookups)
- Choose nameservers: select Use UnderHost's Nameservers if you want DNS hosted here, or enter custom nameservers if managing DNS elsewhere
- Enter registrant contact information (required by ICANN)
- Complete payment
ICANN requires registrant information to be accurate. Inaccurate WHOIS data can result in domain suspension. Your details are protected from public view if you enable WHOIS privacy.
Bitcoin payment timing
Domain registrations paid via Bitcoin may take up to a few hours to complete registration after payment. The Bitcoin transaction must receive confirmations and the registrar order must finish processing before the domain appears as fully registered in CustomerPanel.
After registration
Once registered:
- The domain is active in your CustomerPanel under Domains → My Domains
- If you chose UnderHost nameservers, a DNS zone is created automatically
- Point the domain to your hosting by adding an A record (or changing nameservers to UnderHost)-see How to configure DNS
- If you paid by Bitcoin, the domain may remain pending for up to a few hours while payment confirmations and registrar processing complete
- New domains typically resolve within 15 minutes to 2 hours after DNS is configured
If you registered the domain without a hosting account, you can add hosting later and point the domain at that time.
Renewal notifications
UnderHost sends renewal reminder emails 60, 30, and 7 days before a domain expires. Domains with auto-renewal enabled are renewed automatically. Expired domains enter a redemption grace period where recovery is possible but may cost extra-always renew on time. See How to renew your domain.
