The correct incoming and outgoing mail server settings for Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Gmail app, and mobile apps on UnderHost hosting.

On this page

Use these settings to configure any email client or app with your UnderHost email account.

Replace "yourdomain.com" with your actual domain

The mail server hostname is always mail.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is your actual domain. If your domain is mycompany.net, the mail server is mail.mycompany.net.

IMAP vs POP3

  • IMAP (recommended)-Keeps email on the server and syncs across all devices. Read on your phone, reply on your laptop-everything stays in sync. Best for most users.
  • POP3-Downloads email to your device and usually deletes it from the server. Suitable for single-device access but can cause problems if you check email from multiple devices.

Microsoft Outlook setup

  1. Open Outlook → File → Add Account
  2. Enter your email address and click Connect
  3. If auto-configuration fails, choose IMAP as the account type
  4. Enter the incoming server settings above (port 993, SSL)
  5. Enter the outgoing server settings (port 587, STARTTLS)
  6. Enter your full email address as the username and your email password
  7. Click Done

Apple Mail setup

  1. Open Mail → Mail menu → Add Account → Other Mail Account
  2. Enter your name, email address, and password
  3. Apple Mail may auto-detect settings. If not, enter the IMAP/SMTP settings manually
  4. Use port 993 (IMAP) and 465 (SMTP) with SSL

Mobile apps (Android / iOS)

On Android (Gmail app or native mail) and iOS (Mail app), look for "Other" or "Manual Setup" when adding an account. Enter the IMAP settings above. Most mobile apps support SSL on port 993 (incoming) and 465 or 587 (outgoing).

Troubleshooting connection issues

Confirm you're using the full email address as the username (not just the local part before @). Check the password is correct by testing it in webmail first. Reset the password in cPanel → Email Accounts if needed.
If you use your server hostname (e.g. server.underhost.com) instead of mail.yourdomain.com, you may see a certificate warning. Either use the server hostname as the mail server address (the hostname has a valid certificate), or wait for AutoSSL to issue a certificate for mail.yourdomain.com after DNS propagates.
Check that your domain's MX record points to your UnderHost server. In cPanel → Zone Editor, the MX record should point to mail.yourdomain.com. Also verify the incoming mail server settings and port. Use the Email Check tool to verify MX records.
