Change the primary domain on your hosting account

You can request a primary domain change for many hosting services, but it can affect website files, email, SSL, DNS, and application URLs.

On this page

Yes, the primary domain on many hosting accounts can be changed by support. It is not only a label change: the primary domain can affect DNS, email, SSL, website paths, redirects, and application configuration.

Before requesting a primary domain change

  • Make sure the new domain is registered and under your control.
  • Point the new domain to UnderHost nameservers or to the hosting server IP.
  • Download a current backup of website files, databases, and email.
  • Check whether your website stores the old domain in configuration or database records.
  • Plan redirects from the old domain to the new domain if the public website address is changing.
Changing the primary domain can affect email

Email addresses, forwarders, DNS records, SSL certificates, and application links may need to be recreated or updated after the change. If you only want a second domain to show the same website, use a parked domain or alias instead.

How to request the change

  1. Log in to CustomerPanel.
  2. Open a Technical Support ticket for the hosting service.
  3. Include the current primary domain, the new primary domain, and confirmation that you have a backup.
  4. Tell support whether the old domain should redirect to the new domain after the change.
  5. After support confirms the change, test the website, SSL, email, and redirects.
