Email aliases and multiple addresses in cPanel

Create email aliases so multiple addresses deliver to one mailbox. Covers cPanel email accounts vs forwarders, how to use a single inbox for multiple addresses,

On this page

An email alias is an alternative email address that delivers mail to an existing mailbox. Instead of checking five separate inboxes, all mail sent to info@, support@, sales@, hello@, and contact@ can land in a single inbox.

What is an email alias?

cPanel does not have a dedicated "alias" feature, but the same effect is achieved using email forwarders. You create a forwarder from the alias address pointing to the real mailbox:

  • sales@yourdomain.com → forwards to → main@yourdomain.com
  • info@yourdomain.com → forwards to → main@yourdomain.com
  • support@yourdomain.com → forwards to → main@yourdomain.com

All three deliver to main@yourdomain.com. You only maintain one mailbox.

Create an alias via forwarder

  1. Log in to cPanel → Email → Forwarders
  2. Click Add Forwarder
  3. Enter the alias address (e.g., sales)
  4. Select your domain
  5. Under Destination, enter the real mailbox (e.g., main@yourdomain.com)
  6. Click Add Forwarder

Repeat for each alias. The real mailbox must exist as a cPanel email account (or be a valid external address).

Multiple domains, one inbox

If you have multiple domains (addon domains) on the same cPanel account, you can forward mail from all of them to one mailbox. For example:

  • info@domain1.commain@domain1.com
  • info@domain2.commain@domain1.com

Set up a forwarder for each domain using the same destination address.

Send mail as the alias

Forwarders only receive mail-they don't let you send mail as the alias address. To send email from sales@yourdomain.com while using the main@yourdomain.com mailbox, configure your email client to use a different "From" name and address:

  • Outlook: Go to File → Account Settings → More Settings → General → enter the alias as the "Reply-to" address
  • Gmail (via SMTP): Settings → Accounts → Add another email address → enter the alias-Gmail sends it using your SMTP credentials but shows the alias as the sender
  • Thunderbird: Account Settings → Manage Identities → Add Identity with the alias as the email address
