Email forwarders in cPanel: redirect to another

Create, test, and delete cPanel email forwarders. Learn how source mailboxes, multiple destinations, domain forwarders,

On this page

A forwarder sends email received at one address to another address automatically. For example, mail sent to sales@example.com can forward to a team member, a Gmail inbox, or several destination addresses.

Create a forwarder

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open Email and choose Forwarders.
  3. Click Add Forwarder.
  4. Enter the local part of the source address, such as sales.
  5. Select the domain.
  6. Enter the full destination email address.
  7. Click Add Forwarder.

The forwarder starts working immediately. Send a test message from an outside address and confirm delivery at the destination.

Forward to multiple destinations

To forward one address to several people, create more than one forwarder with the same source address and a different destination. For example:

  • support@example.com to alice@example.com
  • support@example.com to bob@example.com

If the source address also has a mailbox, mail can be stored locally and forwarded externally. If the source address has only a forwarder, cPanel passes mail onward but does not keep a local mailbox copy.

Domain forwarder

A domain forwarder redirects all mail from one domain to matching addresses on another domain. This is useful during a rebrand or domain .

  1. Open Email and choose Forwarders.
  2. Click Add Domain Forwarder.
  3. Select the source domain.
  4. Enter the destination domain.
  5. Save and test with a non-critical address.

Domain forwarders do not replace MX records. If your mail is hosted externally, configure MX and routing correctly first.

Delete a forwarder

  1. Open Email and choose Forwarders.
  2. Find the forwarder in the list.
  3. Click Delete and confirm.

Deleting a forwarder does not delete a mailbox with the same address. It only stops forwarding new incoming mail.

Troubleshooting

  • Forwarded mail goes to spam: forwarding can break SPF alignment at the destination. Use proper mailbox access or ask support if SRS is available.
  • Mail loops: avoid forwarding two addresses to each other.
  • Catch-all needed: use Default Address, but read the spam warning first.
  • Only some messages forward: check destination mailbox quota, spam filtering, and filters at the destination.
