Default Address in cPanel: handle unmatched mail
Use cPanel Default Address to control what happens when someone emails an address that does not exist on your domain.
The cPanel Default Address controls what happens to email sent to an address that does not exist on your domain. For example, if sales@example.com does not exist and someone sends mail to it, Default Address decides whether the message is rejected, discarded, or forwarded somewhere else.
Default Address options
| Option | What it does | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|
| Fail with message | Rejects mail to unknown addresses with a delivery failure. | Yes, usually best. |
| Discard | Deletes mail to unknown addresses without delivery. | Use only if you understand the risk. |
| Forward to email address | Creates a catch-all destination for unknown addresses. | Use carefully; it often attracts spam. |
| Pipe to program | Sends mail to a script. | Advanced only. |
Set the default address
- Log in to cPanel.
- Open Email and choose Default Address.
- Select the domain.
- Choose whether to fail, discard, forward, or pipe mail to a program.
- Click Change.
For most domains, UnderHost recommends rejecting unknown addresses with a clear failure message. This tells legitimate senders the address is wrong and avoids silently losing mail.
Catch-all caution
A catch-all forwards mail for every unknown address at your domain. That can sound convenient, but it also means spam sent to random addresses such as abc123@example.com lands in your mailbox.
If a domain receives dictionary-attack spam, a catch-all can fill your mailbox and hosting disk quickly. Use named mailboxes or forwarders for addresses you actually need.
Troubleshooting
- Expected mail is bouncing: create the real mailbox or forwarder instead of relying on Default Address.
- Too much spam is arriving: stop forwarding unknown addresses and set Default Address to fail.
- Mail disappears silently: check whether Default Address is set to discard.
- Only one address should redirect: use Email Forwarders, not a catch-all.
