Managed vs unmanaged dedicated servers at UnderHost

UnderHost dedicated servers are self-managed by default. Learn what managed server support includes, how to add it, and when it makes sense for your workload.

On this page

UnderHost dedicated servers are provisioned as self-managed by default-you have full root access and full responsibility for operating system administration. If you need someone else to handle OS-level tasks, managed server support is available as an add-on.

Unmanaged (default)

On an unmanaged dedicated server, UnderHost provides and maintains:

  • Physical hardware and data center infrastructure
  • Network connectivity and uplink
  • Power and cooling
  • Hardware replacement for component failures
  • Initial OS installation

You are responsible for everything above the hardware layer: OS updates, software installation, security patching, backups, firewall configuration, performance monitoring, and troubleshooting.

Managed server support

UnderHost's Server Management add-on extends what UnderHost handles on your dedicated server:

For dedicated servers covered by Server Management, UnderShield is installed by default as part of the monitoring setup. This lets UnderHost staff review health signals such as uptime, resource usage, disk pressure, and service check-ins while helping with managed support requests.
