Bandwidth and network on UnderHost dedicated servers

Understand how bandwidth is measured on dedicated servers, what unmetered means, how to monitor usage, and what happens when you exceed your allocation.

On this page

UnderHost dedicated servers are available with both metered (TB allocation) and unmetered (port speed-based) bandwidth. Understanding how each works helps you choose the right plan and avoid unexpected costs.

Metered vs unmetered bandwidth

TypeHow it worksBest for
Metered (TB allocation)You get a fixed amount of data transfer per month (e.g., 10 TB). The port speed may be high, but your total transfer is capped.Servers with consistent, predictable traffic
Unmetered (port speed)Unlimited total data transfer but limited by port speed (e.g., 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps). You can use as much data as you can push through the port.Servers with unpredictable or very high traffic bursts
10 Gbps unmetered bandwidth explained

A 10 Gbps unmetered connection means your server can push up to 10 Gbps continuously with no monthly data cap. In a month, 10 Gbps = approximately 3.2 petabytes of potential transfer. In practice, no site uses this all the time, but it's available for high-demand periods. See the 10 Gbps dedicated server page for available plans.

How bandwidth is measured

Bandwidth is measured as the total data transferred between your server and the internet-including:

  • Inbound traffic (data received by the server-file uploads, API requests)
  • Outbound traffic (data sent from the server-web pages, file downloads)

Some plans count outbound only; others count total (in + out). Your plan details in CustomerPanel specify which applies.

Monitor your usage

Check bandwidth usage from CustomerPanel → Services → your server → usage graphs. For more detailed monitoring, install vnStat on your server:

# Install vnStat
apt install vnstat -y # Ubuntu
dnf install vnstat -y # AlmaLinux

# View monthly usage
vnstat -m

# View hourly usage today
vnstat -h

vnStat tracks interface usage over time and can alert you when you approach limits.

Exceeding your allocation

For metered plans, if you approach your monthly allocation:

  • UnderHost will contact you before you hit the limit if possible
  • You can purchase additional bandwidth blocks-open a support ticket
  • Alternatively, upgrade to a higher-bandwidth plan or an unmetered port

Servers are not automatically suspended for bandwidth overages-an overage fee or plan upgrade may apply depending on your service agreement.

Burst bandwidth

Some dedicated server plans support burst bandwidth-the ability to temporarily exceed the standard port speed for short periods. Burst capability varies by plan and data center. Check your service agreement or open a support ticket if you need clarification on burst capabilities for your server.
